Music is a great part of life, and music is always changing. Music can define a culture and as well as be a form of therapy for individuals. Students around Riverside Secondary school were interviewed to get opinions on what were the best songs and most common genres of the past year.

Music is subjective to everyone; each is to their own when it comes to what they choose to listen to. Some may say that preference in music can characterize and define a person’s personality. According to Kendra Cherry from Music Preferences and Your Personality, the results from various studies have “indicated that personality and musical taste are indeed linked.”

“My favourite song right now is “Bikini Bottom” by Ice Spice, I just think it’s really catchy and has good lyrics,” said Divine Edosomwan, a grade 11 student.

The Eddy was curious what the musical tastes of some of its students are, and after some exploration, it was revealed that most students are drawn to the hip-hop and rap genre. “My favourite song right now is “Bikini Bottom” by Ice Spice, I just think it’s really catchy and has good lyrics,” said Divine Edosomwan, a grade 11 student. Ice Spice is an up-and-coming rapper from the Bronx, who has made multiple hits that have made the Billboard Hot 100; songs such as “In Ha Mood,” “Bikini Bottom,” “Munch,” and her most recent success, alongside artist Pinkpantheress is “Boy’s a Liar pt. 2.”  The song is a sequel to the original “Boy’s a liar,” but this time around had rapper Ice Spice on the track as a feature, which took the world by storm, putting it at the top of the charts. “I really like Emo Rap I guess,” said William Chase, a grade 11 student. “My favourite song right now is a Juice Wrld song, called “In My Head.” The lyrics are very motivational and relatable and relevant.”

Compared to the Billboard top 100, what the students at Riverside listen to seems to completely differ from the Billboard, with artists such as The Weeknd or SZA. While some students say that they do listen to a few of the artists on the Hot 100, those artists don’t seem to be much from the list. “Yeah, I listen to some of these people like 21 Savage and Uzi and maybe Ice Spice, but really I’ll be listening to like Keshi,” said Devon Francis, a grade 10 student. Francis also stated that while his favourite is RnB, he also enjoys rap as one of his preferred genres.

While many artists on the top of the charts do not seem to be what Riverside students are interested in, there are a few songs and artists that the students are listening to right now, with artists such as Ice Spice, Juice Wrld, Keshi and many more. The charts that are representing the current trending songs will not always be true when it comes to what many students are listening to; with each individual person having their own unique taste in music, it is impossible to accurately assess what everyone loves by just checking out the charts.
