Almost everyone has heard of the popular books, The Fault in Our Stars, Where’d you Go Bernadette?, and The Book Thief. But the authors who wrote these best-selling novels have also written other amazing books, and some of these are overshadowed by the author’s more popular novels.
John Green’s heart-breaking novel, The Fault in Our Stars, was actually published in 2012, but it was only two years later that it got some real attention when the novel was made into a movie. According to Forbes Magazine, the movie made $26.1m, just on the opening day. The book obviously gained some attention after the movie was released, but the audience stopped there. Some discovered some of his other novels such as Paper Towns which was also turned into a movie, but nobody really explored any of his other works: An Abundance of Katherines, Will Grayson, Will Grayson, and Let It Snow, for example.
This also happens with other books, as well. Marcus Zusak wrote two international best-sellers, The Messenger, and The Book Thief, but Zusak has been writing for a long time and has written many other novels such as When Dogs Cry, and The Underdog. Even books which haven’t been turned into movies are overshadowing other books. The popular novel, Where’d You Go Bernadette? written by Maria Semple, was on the NPR Paperback Fiction Bestseller list for 72 weeks. But, this wasn’t Semple’s first novel. She published her first book in 2008, titled This One is Mine. However, critics say that this novel wasn’t as well-written as Where’d You Go Bernadette?. Semple also wrote screenplays for 90210, Beverly Hills.
This doesn’t just happen with novels, either. This occurs in music, movies, and even TV shows, as well. Sometimes, more popular novels, songs, or movies tower over others, and the light needs to be shined on the shorter towers. If you like these authors, go and explore some of their earlier or less known works.
