On Friday, December 14, the annual “War on the Floor” wrestling meet took place at Pinetree Secondary. “War on the floor” is a BC wrestling event that is presented to wrestlers with the help of SFU and Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club. Our Riverside team had five athletes attend the event. Students from all around BC came to Pinetree to compete, including athletes from Alberta. This was the first wrestling meet of the year for our school team.
Grade 11 student Ryann McCready and grade 12 students Keisha Nagorr and Khaya Mackillop represented Riverside in the female category. The meet held an elite and a novice tournament, and the Riverside girls competed in elite. Nagorr ended up taking home the third-place title in her weight class. “It was nice to see Riverside represented as a wrestling team again, at the war on the floor meet. It was a challenge to compete at such a high level, as we had just started fully training recently,” said McCready.
The Riverside wrestling team trains every day of the school week: Mondays and Fridays at Riverside, Tuesdays and Thursdays at Centennial Secondary and Wednesdays at either Terry Fox Secondary or Pinetree Secondary. They have been practicing together for six weeks with coaches Mr. Rob Thomson and Mr. Brandon Tuason, both from Centennial High School. Mr. Thomson is well know at Riverside, since he used to be a teacher and coach at our school.
Male athletes, Jason Son and Mohammed Abdul-Hussain also competed in the meet on Friday.
The team plans to keep practicing until Provincials in early March, hoping for new recruits as they are a small team.
