This new school year, Riverside is pleased to welcome a new vice-principal, Mr. Hyde to the team.
Prior to Riverside, Mr.Hyde taught at the middle school level and the high school level. He’d spent two years teaching at a middle school, following nine and a half years at Charles Best. He recently filled in as vice-principal for Mr. Craig Reichel at Charles Best Secondary school before coming to Riverside.
“It’s been excellent here at Riverside so far. Everyone’s very welcoming, both staff and students. It’s a very Port Coquitlam thing to have kids walk up and shake your hand to introduce themselves, as it doesn’t happen all over the place. It’s just been excellent so far and I look forward to even more” said Hyde.
As a principal, Mr.Hyde believes the best philosophy is fairness and communication. “I need to make sure that my expectations are clear and give kids the chance to make their own decisions” said Hyde. He also believes that trust is an important factor in order to help guide and assist different students. Mr. Hyde explains that being able to help students attain their goals, and watch them grow is one of the most valuable experiences a principal or teacher can have. “When alumni kids come back years later and tell you about all the wonderful things they’ve done in their life, that’s very rewarding,” said Hyde.
When Mr. Hyde was asked what he likes to do outside of school and during his free time, he said that he enjoys coaching and playing sports such as football, basketball, baseball and rugby, as he has played college baseball, coached high school basketball and rugby. Currently he coaches community baseball in Maple Ridge. “I’m a huge outdoors guy, I enjoy lots of camping and fishing when I get the chance.”
Here at the Eddy, we all welcome Mr. Hyde and hope he enjoys his position here.
