On Thursday, December 20, at 7:30pm, Riverside will be hosting a Christmas Cabaret Fundraiser. The Christmas Cabaret is a fundraiser for Riverside Secondary’s musical theatre program and one of the organizers is Riverside teacher, Ms. Nicole Roberge. Tickets can be purchased for $5 each. The event has been a tradition for five years at Riverside and it is an opportunity for musical theatre students to get on stage to practice before the spring musical, which this year is Newsies. The musical premieres in February, but at the Cabaret, the students have a chance to sing and dance in front of a crowd for the first time.

The cabaret fundraiser is completely student driven. Applications are accepted by Ms. Roberge in November, and students can choose to perform any song with anyone. The students’ musical performances are completely choreographed and organized by themselves. Some of the performances will include a performance of Cell Block Tango by a group of musical theatre students, as well as many performances from Riverside’s dance program. There will be musical theatre medleys performed by the dance program. There will be song and dance performances from the famous musicals of West Side Story, Cats, Footloose and In The Heights. The entire cabaret will last around one hour.

“It’s an opportunity for musical theatre students to get on stage practice. I don’t choreograph them, I don’t musical direct, Ms. Glenda Ottens doesn’t help, it’s them,” said Roberge.

At the cabaret, there will also be a mocktail bar open (non-alcoholic cocktails) and sweet treats for sale. All proceeds will go to Riverside’s musical theatre program. There will also be raffle prizes available of donated artwork from Riverside alumni.

The cabaret is a very exciting and fun experience. So, on December 20, come on down to support Riverside’s musical theatre program and have a good time at the Christmas Cabaret.
