After a successful start to the season, Riverside’s cross-country team geared up with Mundy Park runs for the Districts and the Fraser Valley Championships. Riverside teachers, Mr. Philip Barrington Ms. Erin Tate and Mrs. Tara Keating, are coaching the team again for the eighth year in a row.
Cross-country is a sport where individuals compete against other runners, but it is really about competing against yourself, pushing past your limits, running the entire race, and improving your time. Cross-country is also a challenging sport as runners are not on a track, but on often un-even or rough terrain, and runners complete in variable weather, which can affect times.
On October 24, the team competed at the district championships with the senior girls’ team finishing in first place as a team. Olivia McDonell came first overall, Shelby Connelly came second, Cassie Robinson came third Maria Kim came fifth, and Breelyn Plesha came ninth. The girls will be heading off to provincials in Nanimo, BC on November 3. “They all ran extremely well and we hope they do well at the BC’s; the goal was to run well and not get hurt,” said Mr. Barrington.
Good luck to the amazing girl’s team at the provincials.
