The new movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them recently hit the theaters. This movie takes place in 1926, 65 years before Harry goes to Hogwarts. Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) is a wizard who believes that instead of killing magical creatures, wizards should save them and realize their potential. This thrill of a movie is based off of the screenplay written by J.K. Rowling.
Newt is a wizard zoologist who studies and saves ‘Fantastic Beasts’. Newt decides to write a guidebook or textbook to educate fellow wizards on the topic of these creatures. He travels to New York City in hopes of releasing his ‘Thunderbird’ Frank, into Arizona. Newt carries a magical briefcase with him that contains his creatures. He accidentally switched suitcases with a muggle and his creatures are unleashed all over New York. Newt goes on an adventure to find and capture his beasts all the while trying to defeat an ‘Obscurus’ (a young powerful wizard who became an evil force) who is causing havoc in the city.
The movie received mostly good reviews with a few bad ones. It is a very high energy movie that can be serious, but also has a comical side to it. I was, at first, skeptical about the movie and didn’t think that it could even come close to being as good as the Harry Potter series, but it was a lot better than I expected. I watched it in 3D and it really did add to the movie and felt realistic.
There are some things about the movie that are problematic. The movie is quite long with a lot happening that is, at times, confusing. It seems that the creators of the movie tried to fit in too much. The movie is two hours and twelve minutes long.
The movie did clear up a lot of unanswered questions that people still had after the Harry Potter series ended. There have even been theories by fans that Credence Barebone (one of the characters) will have something to do with Voldemort. These are all just theories made by dedicated fans though.
This movie is definitely worth a watch; it will surely keep you entertained.
